I am deeply honored to dedicate Flute Solo II (2011) to my friend and publisher, Helmut Calabrese. On receiving the piece, Dr. Calabrese noted: "I like the way the music sort of floats around in space holding on to things that it remembers while pushing forward in an environment that is, at times, uncontrollable." Flute Solo II continues an ongoing effort of mine to write short unaccompanied solos for each instrument, and again like the others in the series, the work is a short character study, displaying the full compass of the instrument and its many colors. This particular work begins in the low register of the flute, with the pitches D, F-sharp and G, and then goes on to introduce a variety of different melodic shapes, chief among them the "wedge" shape. The tempo is slow throughout and the work is approximately 2 1/2 minutes in length. -David Saperstein
