Biography
Christian Carey (b. 1973) is a composer and musicologist. His research focuses on postwar American composers and post-tonal music theory. He has published articles about Elliott Carter, Ralph Shapey, Milton Babbitt and others in Perspectives of New Music, the New Grove Dictionary of American Music (forthcoming, 2013), Intégral, Musicworks, Tempo, Musical America, and Signal to Noise Magazine. He holds degrees from the Juilliard School (Mus.B.) and Boston University (MM), where he studied with Lukas Foss, and a Ph.D. in Music from Rutgers University, where his advisor was Charles Wuorinen. The American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), New York New Music Ensemble, Atlantic Chamber Orchestra, Cassatt String Quartet, Locrian Chamber Players, Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, and loadbang have performed his compositions. Perspectives of New Music and Open Space Magazine recently commissioned Carey’s flute/piano duo “For Milton” for a CD recording that will accompany a memorial issue honoring Milton Babbitt. After serving as Aural Skills Coordinator at the Manhattan School of Music, he is currently an Assistant Professor of Music at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey.
