Sonorific Duo For Flute and Percussion

(Score)

Program Notes:

Sonorific Duo (2007) was composed for and premiered by Due East. Like several of my works, timbre and color are important ingredients. This is partly achieved by employing extended techniques particularly for the flutist: flutter tongue, pitch bends, quarter tones in some of the melody, tongue click, blow without producing a pitch, slap the key, rattle keys without blowing, color (enharmonic trills), "jet whistle" - loud exhalation through flute, a rapid jet whistle gliss with flutter, increase air pressure to produce glissing into the highest tessiture, multiphonics, and lip vibrato progressively narrower and faster or progressively wider and slower (both using quarter tones). The percussion instruments used are bass drum, floor tom tom, tenor drum, snare drum, two tom toms, and ride, sizzle, and crash cymbals and vibraphone. Beaters used are soft mallets, medium mallets, hard mallets, and snare drum sticks. - Patrick Hardish
